Developing 1st Generation Pastors: A Biblical-Theological Approach for Succession

Who is your successor and how do you choose?

Every pastor/leader needs a successor as everyone have to step down from their position at some point in life either through retirement or through death, etc. But many do not plan for succession. Because, often in many independent churches in India pastor’s son(s), son(s)-in-law, or relatives becomes the next senior (or main or lead) pastor after the incumbent lead pastor. Why is only pastor’s family members succeed the current lead pastor? Is this a biblical way of succession? How to prepare for succession? How to train first-generation pastors for leadership succession? The author addresses questions such as these in this book and deals with them in biblical theology perspective and shows the independent churches and its pastors a way for their succession.

M. Sai Ankem has written an investigation of the development of first-generation pastors examining the factors which make this process difficult (and glorious). A survey sociologically, theologically and practically results in giving the reader a greater awareness of these issues and an appreciation for the author’s experience and insight. Emerging leaders will profit; Christian workers in India will gain insight; and all of us concerned for the discipleship and development of pastoral staff will be challenged.
